What Drives You? The Techniques for Motivating Yourself

Bianca rose for the sound of pigeons cooing and traffic grumbling at work below. As she yawned and stretched, she considered what was waiting for her that particular day.
She felt her motivation slowly drain away with every deadline and commitment that zipped through her thoughts. As Bianca begun to wither and wilt internally, she remembered the motivation pills she had purchased last week in the Good Value Pharmacy.
There were yellow pills labeled 'Money', pink pills labeled 'Pride', green pills labeled 'Family', purple pills labeled 'Respect' and a few ugly grey pills labeled 'Nagging Advice'. The chemist had told her as he dispensed the pills that some is acceptable for her and some wouldn't... he could never tell upfront which pills would work for which customers. Your advice in mind along with a smile on her lips, Bianca reached for the one she knew will be just right for her...
One of the better things you can do for yourself in your journey of self discovery would be to work out what drives you. The first task is to identify your values as they provide the fuel for your motivation and the drive behind all you do in life. If you'd prefer something you will always get the motivation and energy to make it happen. If you don't value something, you'll always struggle to get the motivation and energy to do it.
Your values are precisely what are important to you. Those are the broad concepts that guide your decisions in everyday life and form the basis of your character. Your values also see how you spend your time. By way of example, if your most important value is health, you will spend your time quite differently from someone whose most crucial value is career or family.
Values also drive all of your motivation. You won't pursue a strategy unless it relates to something you value at some level. Identifying your values enables you to kick-start your own motivation, set goals which might be appropriate and spending some time on things that you need.
How Your Values Are Formed
Your values come from a number of sources together with your family, friends, religion, school, teachers, country and the media. They are also shaped at any time in your life by significant emotional events like natural disasters, emotional abuse, global depression or war.
Your values change while you grow and evolve. Once you change your values, you will also change some of your beliefs and the way you live life.
How To Identify Your Personal Values
Identifying your personal values helps you to:
- Understand why some issues can be a problem for you;
- See why the main things motivate you and others don't; and
- Identify and overcome problem areas of your life.
For example, assume you might have weight issues. You determine your own values and find that physical fitness and health doesn't even rate a mention inside your values. You may have found the reasons why you are having weight issues, i.e. physical fitness and health is not something you value. While this remains the case it'll be very difficult for you to lose fat and gain a greater level of health and fitness in your life since you will not have any motivation for this.
You can identify your values by thinking about:
- What is important to me in relation to my life, career, relationships etc?
- What would cause me to go out of my life, career, relationships, etc?
For those who have an understanding of your values, it is important to see how they affect your motivation.
Your values drive your motivation. Should you set goals that are aligned with your values, you've got the motivation to help you achieve them. Should you set goals which aren't in line with your values, it'll be an uphill struggle to achieve them.
When you understand your values along with their impact on how you are still motivating yourself you will have a wonderful insight into the reason why you achieve the results that you do in life. You will also know how to motivate yourself more effectively later on.
Motivation comes either from the inside of you (intrinsic motivation) or from another source (extrinsic motivation).
Extrinsic motivationis given by some factor external for you. It can take the form of inducements (rewards) or punishments. The rewards could be tangible or intangible (including praise).
Intrinsic motivationis evident once you engage in an activity for its own sake without any external incentive. Seems like from research created by Albert Bandura that if you've got more self efficacy (belief absolutely need abilities to control your environment) you might be more highly intrinsically motivated than other individuals.
As intrinsic motivation could be the only one you can tote around and call upon at any time, it is the most important when it comes to self motivation.
Intrinsic motivation could be broken down further into 'towards' motivation and 'away from' motivation. 'Towards' motivation is motivation towards something want and 'away from' motivation is motivation faraway from something you don't want.
'Away From' Motivation
'Away from' motivation is driven by pain. Pain motivated performance is just not pleasant, produces inconsistent results and disappears in the event the pain is no longer present.
'Away from motivation' does, however, give you a strong initial motivation to move away from the thing you don't want in your own life. A problem with using this type of motivation is that you simply wait until things are bad before you take action to change them. Additional problems is that you don't have a target or goal you are aiming for (just something are running from) and that means you don't tend to achieve results.
Sophia uses 'away from' motivation in terms of her weight. Because of this she is the classic yo yo dieter. Her process goes similar to this. Sophia looks in the mirror and is aware that she is overweight. She says to herself, 'I shouldn't be fat anymore'. She then continues on a diet to ensure she's no longer fat. (Jane is moving away from being fat). Sooner or later she looks from the mirror and understands that she looks fantastic and is also no longer fat. As she is no longer fat, she's got just lost the cause of her motivation (to stop fat). As there is no longer any motivation, she will no longer stays on the diet and discards her exercise regime. She will not be motivated to accomplish whatever she has to stay fit and healthy. In the course of the future she will look in the mirror and again make up the judgment that she is fat along with the process will start all over again.
When you are motivated away from something that you don't want in daily life, you tend to focus upon the very thing you don't want and that is what you attract to you. As examples:
- If you constantly tell yourself, 'I don't want to be broke', your focus is upon being broke which is where your unconscious mind will aim.
- If you constantly say to yourself, "I don't want to be single", your focus is upon being single that is certainly where your unconscious mind will aim.
Motivation from what you don't want can keep you going, but it doesn't achieve this for long and you is not sure what results you may achieve. It can offer you a fantastic initial boost of energy, but you can never guarantee what your location is going to end up as there isn't a firm direction planned, just a place you need to get away from. If you use away from motivation in your life, you are going to tend to create a group of crises to keep yourself motivated.
The use of 'towards motivation' you will take action to go towards your goal and you will probably achieve them more often than not.
'Towards' motivation is the best approach to motivate yourself. When you are motivated towards what you look for, you tend to stay consistently motivated before you achieve your goal (provided you desire it enough).
If you are motivated towards what you want, you constantly set and attain goals each time stretching yourself further. Through the use of motivation towards what you would like you give yourself a much better chance of achieving what you need out of life.
How can you tell If The Motivation You utilize Is 'Towards' Or 'Away From' Motivation?
Now that we know that values drive your motivation understanding that motivation can be either towards what you would like or away from what you don't want. Now it is time and energy to review your values to learn whether the underlying motivation for each of your values is:
- towards what you look for; or
- away from everything you don't want.
To determine whether or not the underlying motivation per value is 'towards' or 'away from' contemplate, "Why is that value important to me?" then tune in to your self-talk and note everything you say to yourself. The clues to whether you are using towards or far from motivation for that value are:
You are probably using 'towards' motivation should you:
- talk about what you do want
- don't use comparisons in your explanation (better than, worse than, greater than)
You are probably using 'away from' motivation if you:
- talk about what you don't want
- make comparisons in your explanation or use words for example 'better than', 'more than', 'less than', 'best' etc. (These show you are unhappy with in which you currently are)
- use words such as 'must', 'need', 'have to', 'got to' etc
As an example, feel that 'money' was your highest value in relation to your career. You then think about, "Why is the value 'compensation' crucial that you me in relation to my career?"
Should your answer is, "Because I want to create a lot of money and reside in luxury", the response would indicate 'towards' motivation just for this value.
If your fact is, "Because I don't want to be broke and i also have to be able to pay my bills", the response would indicate 'away from' motivation with this value.
Your chances of achieving goals relating to 'money' are much greater if you are using towards motivation.
Should you have identified 'away from' motivation in relation to any of your values, you can find:
- This area of your life is one where you will experience the most difficulties;
- You won't be achieving the results in el born area of your life that you might wish; and
- There are unresolved issues to become cleared away and healed with regards to this area of your life before you decide to will experience the success you would like.
This is wonderful information to get as it identifies regions of your life for you to focus upon.
Issues with Motivation
We all experience problems with motivation at some point. Those times when you just can't appear to find the desire to do items you know you should. The down sides can arise because:
- You are low on energy. There are some easy things I'm certain you do when you are feeling 'low' to obtain your energy back. Remember too that sometimes in life, you may need and deserve an escape.
- The thing you are aiming towards is not something you value. (In such cases, question whether you should be exerting your power in that direction); or
- You have trouible with your motivation strategy (see below).
Whether it is your motivation strategy that is causing you challenges, identify which section of the strategy is causing the problem and then use one of the following ways to assist you to change it. If you're not motivated because:
- You feel overwhelmed, break the aim down into smaller steps and do them individually.
- You are only using 'away from' motivation, identify where you are aiming and focus upon the positive outcomes of attaining it.
- You feel obliged to pursue the goal, either accept desire to is not for you and let it go or focus upon the positive outcomes you will definately get from achieving the goal.
- You are frightened, identify what might go wrong and what you'll do if it did.
If you understand your values, you'll find out what motivates you and why. If you discover regardless if you are using towards or far from motivation in different areas of your life, you will have answers why some parts of your life are successful yet others are not.
